World Car Free Day. Did you take any action in 2019?

World Car Free Day which is celebrated on 22 September initially was caused by oil crisis and now it is one of the ways to draw people’s attention to air pollution problem. It is also to promote active and healthy way of life by walking or cycling instead of driving.  Moreover studies showed that for short trips in cities, one can reach more quickly using a bicycle rather than using a car.

How does one car affect the air?

An average car annually emits more than 100 kg of carbon monoxide, more than 20 kg of nitrogen oxides, about 20 kg of hydrocarbons, up to 10 kg of benzpyrene, more than 1 kg of solid particles and other harmful substances, including lead (plumbum). It is easy to check at  http://waqi.info/ if to see Air Quality Indicator in your city during traffic jams and compare these numbers with those at night.

How does polluted air affect our health?

Carbon monoxide (CO)

Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, toxic yet non-irritating gas. It is a product of combustion of fuel such as natural gas, coal or wood. Vehicular exhaust contributes to the majority of carbon monoxide let into our atmosphere. It creates a smog type formation in the air that has been linked to many lung diseases and disruptions to the natural environment and animals.

Nitrogen oxides (NOx)

Nitrogen oxides, particularly nitrogen dioxide, are expelled from high temperature combustion. They can be seen as a brown haze dome above or a plume downwind of cities. Nitrogen dioxide is a chemical compound with the formula NO2. It is one of several nitrogen oxides. One of the most prominent air pollutants, this reddish-brown toxic gas has a characteristic sharp, biting odor. It is very harmful for health.

Particles, alternatively referred to as particulate matter (PM)

Increased levels of fine particles in the air are linked to health hazards such as heart disease, altered lung function and lung cancer. Particulates are related to respiratory infections and can be particularly harmful to those already suffering from conditions like asthma.

Lead – Pb (from the Latin plumbum)

Lead is a heavy metal and chemical element which toxicity was recognized in the late 19th century. It damages the nervous system and interferes with the function of biological enzymes, causing neurological disorders, such as brain damage and behavioral problems.

How to get protected from the polluted air?
